Pathways

There are a variety of study pathways you can take at SWTAFE depending on your goals, previous qualification and experiences.

SWTAFE pathways

All of our courses are designed to prepare you to be job-ready for a career in your chosen field.

Depending on your experience, previous qualifications or course entry requirements, you may start your learning journey at any qualification level at SWTAFE.

After completing your qualification you can then choose to start your career or progress to further study at a higher qualification level.

University pathways

If university is on your radar you can start your studies with us via a diploma course which may gain you credits for future study at university.

Why choose a TAFE to uni pathway?

  • benefit from having not one, but two qualifications
  • gain credits to reduce the number of units you need to complete in order to obtain your university degree
  • save you both time and money through gaining credits
  • you can start working in the industry (after your TAFE course) while completing university
  • boost future employment and career opportunities

Credit transfer

Reduce the time and cost required to complete a university degree by using your SWTAFE qualification to gain credit.

Once you have successfully completed a SWTAFE qualification at Certificate IV level or higher, you can use this to apply for entry into many university programs. Sometimes universities guarantee admission based on your SWTAFE qualification.

University entry

To claim credit, you must apply to the university in accordance with their credit transfer processes.

If there is no formal credit agreement for your course, you can apply directly to the university for credit and they will assess your evidence on a case-by-case basis.

Being eligible for credit does not guarantee that you will be offered a place in a university program. Credit will normally be granted after you have been offered a place.

Pathway to Deakin University

The South West TAFE and Deakin University partnership recognises the importance of local education. It enables you to continue your studies in the region, staying where you have your support, and gaining local insight. This partnership provides our Diploma and Advanced Diploma students with a pathway to reach their dream career.

Those who graduate from selected courses at SWTAFE will be given the opportunity to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (credits) for a selected Deakin University course. There are also guaranteed entry options for some pathways (providing that you successfully complete your course and thus meet Deakin's academic and English entry requirements, that there are vacancies in the course).

You may receive credits when you study a Diploma or Advanced Diploma course at SWTAFE in the following fields:
